Daruma are round papier-maché dolls that symbolize perseverance and good luck. When purchased, both of the daruma’s eyes are blank. The owner paints in one of the eyes when they decide on a goal they wish to achieve, then paints in the second eye once the goal has been achieved. At the start of the new year, people bring old daruma to the temples they were purchased from to be burned in a ceremony.
