Wagashi, or Japanese-style sweets, are best known for their artistic designs reflecting the changing seasons, and winter is when the greatest variety can be found in shops. The treats are made from sweetened mochi that has been carefully cut and shaped into forms suggesting flowers, pine or bamboo branches, or even animals. More recently, one can also find wagashi in Christmas-themed shapes as well.
