Japan in Photos – Obon Spirit Horse
September 01, 2021
Mid-August is typically when families in Japan celebrate Obon, a holiday dedicated to visiting with family and honoring ancestors who have passed away. One of the common traditions is the constructing of shouryo-uma, or “spirit horses” using cucumbers, eggplants, and toothpicks. According to tradition, the animals are meant to help the spirits of ancestors travel to earth and then return home again.
