Japan in Photos – Preparing for Disaster
September 29, 2021
Many communities hold their disaster preparation drills in September, in memory of the Great Kanto Earthquake that struck the Tokyo area on September 1, 1923. In schools, young students frequently keep cloth headcovers in their desks in the event of a strong earthquake. The coverings are easy to fold away and carry, but can help prevent them from being injured by sharp or falling objects.
