Winter in Japan has a number of unique dishes associated with it, and one common favorite around New Years is zenzai, a hot soup or porridge made from azuki beans and topped with either a hot piece of mochi rice cake or chestnuts, depending on the regional style. Zenzai can be very sweet, so it is often served alongside something very salty or sour to balance out the taste.
