Japan in Photos – Setsubun Mantoro

Setsubun is a festival day celebrated near the beginning of February every year in Japan. According to tradition, this time of year is one of two times when the physical world and spirit world come close enough for the two to communicate (the other being O-bon in August). At Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, a unique ceremony called Setsubun Mantoro (literally “ten thousand lanterns”), in which thousands of lanterns are lit to guide spirits of the deceased into the shrine.
