Japan in Photos: Ringing in a New Year

At the end of each year, Buddhist temple across Japan, such as Zojoji in central Tokyo shown here, will ring giant bronze bells to symbolize clearing the mind for the start of the new year. The bells are struck 108 times, reflecting the Buddhist philosophy that there are 108 spiritual weaknesses that must be overcome.
