Shirakawa village in Gifu Prefecture is famous for its traditional farmhouses, built with steeply sloping thatched roofs to withstand the heavy snowfall the area receives. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the village is home to many silkworm farms, which are raised in the high attics of the farmhouses.
