Japan in Photos – Uneme Festival
September 18, 2020

The Uneme festival, conducted in mid-September, has been held at Uneme Shrine in Nara City for nearly 600 years. According to legend, an uneme, or female member of the imperial court, fell in love with the emperor. Though the romance ended in tragedy, the story is commemorated with a lantern parade and a procession of boats on the pond surrounding the shrine.
