Japan in Photos: The Namahage are coming
December 25, 2020
In Akita Prefecture in Japan’s north, a popular festival involving Namahage, or blue- and red-skinned demons, is held every New Year’s Eve. According to folktales the Namahage will take away children who misbehave, so families will have friends or relatives dress in masks and costumes to pay a visit and convince their kids to mind their manners.
