One of the more visually striking festivals of the autumn is the Niihama Taiko Matsuri, held in the city of Niihama in Ehime Prefecture. The origins of the festival date back over 1,000 years, but today the main event is the parade of massive taiko drums, covered in gold embroidery. The drums weigh several tons are lifted up by teams of 150 people each.
