The 5 Highest Mountains in Japan
September 02, 2022
Many people would be able to say "Mt. Fuji," when someone says,” Name one mountain in Japan.” Mt. Fuji's beauty has captured people's heart historically and it has been worshipped since the old days. However, few people, not even Japanese people, can name the five highest mountains in Japan. Let us look at them and see if we recognize them. The data here all came from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan
The 5th highest mountain in Japan is Yarigatake (槍ヶ岳), at 3,180m. It is located in the Hida Mountains. This mountain stands right between Nagano Prefecture and Gifu prefecture.

Third place is shared by two mountains at exactly 3,190m. One is Ainodake (間ノ岳), located between Shizuoka prefecture and Yamanashi prefecture. It is a part of the Akaishi Mountains.

The other is Okuhodakadake (奥穂高岳), which, like Yarigatake, is a part of the Hida Mountains. This mountain is between Shizuoka prefecture and Yamanashi prefecture. However, in 2020, a Japanese TV show conducted research to measure the height of Okuhodakadake, because the last time it was measured in 1975 there were no GPS measurement systems available. According to the TV research, the height of Okuhodakadake was 3191.099m and 1m higher than the official record at the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.

The second highest mountain in Japan is Kitadake (北岳), which is 3,193m high. It stands in northwest Yamanashi prefecture, and is a part of the Akaishi Mountains.

And of course, Mt.Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. Its height is 3776m. Mt.Fuji can be found between Shizuoka prefecture and Yamanashi prefecture. "Which side of Mt.Fuji is more beautiful, Yamanashi side or Shizuoka side?" has been a topic of argument for a long time. Mt. Fuji's season of climbing starts in July and ends on the last day of August.
