Japan in Photos – Tango no Sekku (Children's Day, May 5)
May 31, 2022
On May 5th, families with boys celebrate "Tango no Sekku", decorating their homes with models of old-style armor or helmets, and Gogatsu (May) dolls, in the hope that their sons will grow strong. A boy's first May 5th is called the "Hatsuzekku (first season festival)," and parents celebrate it together with their extended families to pray for the healthy growth of their baby. One of the customary foods eaten on this day is a rice cake wrapped in bamboo leaf called "Chimaki".
