The idea of a "June Bride" has carried over from the west to Japan, with many couples wanting to hold their weddings in the period of warm weather before sometimes oppressive heat of summer begins. While western style weddings are popular, many couples havea Shinto ceremony, in which the bride wears a shiromuku wedding outfit, which typically includes a large white cotton headpiece. It is not uncomon to see wedding processions at some of the larger shrines, in which the bride or an attendant will carry a large paper umbrella to shelter her from the weather.
