Two of Japan's more recent national holidays are Marine Day, observed on the third Monday of July, and Mountain Day, observed on the second Monday of August. In addition to providing official holidays between May and September, these days were selected in recognition of the influence of the ocean and mountains in shaping so much of Japan's culture and history, and their importance to so many people's daily lives today. Many municipalities hold ocean- and mountain-related events on these days.
