March 3 is celebrated as Girls’ Day in Japan, with one of the most common activities being the displays of dolls, all decorated in the robes of a 10th-century Kyoto Imperial Court. In Yanagawa City, in Fukuoka Prefecture, there is an additional local tradition of arranging the dolls in elaborate public displays, ending with a parade through the city’s main river in which the dolls are carried by boat.
