Japan in Photos – Designers Explore New Ideas with Tatami-beri

As more people become conscious of the need to reduce waste and be more mindful of what we consume in our daily lives, designers have begun looking at ways of incorporating traditional materials in the work. By repurposing older items that would normally be discarded, they can create beautiful original works with traditional charm, while reducing waste. One example of this is the use of tatami-beri, or the fabric edge linings usually seen on tatami mats. Normally, when the mats become too frayed and worn, the lining is discarded along with the woven reeds. These new designs are instead incorporating them into fashion items such as bags, belts, and other accessories.
