The Shinkansen bullet trains have become a symbol of Japan's technological innovation and engineering. 2022 happens to be a special anniversary for many of the individual lines, and so Japan Rail East, which operates train lines north from Tokyo, has declared 2022 to be Shinkansen Year. A number of promotions inolving the Tohoku Shinkansen (40th anniversary), the Yamagata Shinkansen (30th anniversary), the Akita Shinkansen (25th anniversary), and the Hokuriku Shinkansen (25th anniversary) will be held this year.
