Kinkaku-ji (official name: Rokuon-ji) is a temple located in Kinkakuji-cho, Kyoto City. It is called Kinkaku-ji because of the gold leaf on the inside and outside of the building. This building was built in 1397, about 600 years ago. Kinkaku-ji was a building representing the Kitayama culture of the early Muromachi period, but it was completely destroyed by fire in 1950 and rebuilt in 1955. In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto". Nowadays, it is a popular spot for tourists from overseas. A phoenix, which is the symbol of the building, is attached to the center of Kinkaku-ji Temple's roof. It has an impressive appearance when exposed to the sunrise or sunset.
