Ama Town in Shimane Prefecture is located on the Oki Islands, about 60km from the mainland. Previously a depopulated municipality, it is now attracting attention as a successful example of regional development. The town not only provides housing and administrative services to new residents, but also offers a training program and an environment in which they can develop and create products that are attractive specialties of the islands. These efforts have led to an increase in the number of young immigrants to the town. The town also focuses on education. There was a high school on the island that was on the verge of extinction due to the declining birthrate. The school was not well equipped and had few teachers, but the entire community has been working to change the educational capacity of the school by creating the concept of a "whole island school" educational environment. The town is also focusing on an island study abroad program for parents and children, which celebrates the richness of nature, culture, and human interaction.
