At the start of 2023, Japan announce its new defense strategy, which included a doubling of spending, increased investment in new technologies, and a more proactive stance within the Indo-Pacific region. Ms Guibourg Delamotte, Associate Professor of Political science at the French Institute of Oriental Studies in Paris, talks with Japan Up Close about whether or not this new policy is an unexpected surprise, or the evolution of existing principles of foreign policy for Japan.
