Webinar: Strengthening Japan-ASEAN Relations Based on the Rule of Law

Given the current geopolitical landscape such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, there has been an increasing awareness of the rule of law, particularly in the Indo-Pacific through Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). Japan is partnering with ASEAN nations to establish a “rule of law” domestically and globally. The webinar explores Japan-ASEAN relations and their achievements and prospects.

We had the pleasure of welcoming two very experienced panellists. Lam Peng Er, PhD, Principal Research Fellow at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore; and Kavi Chongkittavorn, Senior Fellow at the Chulalongkorn University Institute of Security and International Studies. They look back at the Japan-ASEAN partnership for the past 50 years and discuss what is to come in the coming years. Furthermore, they explore how the rule of law shapes relations between ASEAN member states as well as between Japan and ASEAN.
