The town of Toyako in Hokkaido was the site of the 34th G8 Summit in July 2008. Lake Toya is about 11 km long from east to west and 9 km long from north to south, making it the 9th largest lake in Japan in terms of area. There is an island in the middle of the lake, which can be reached by boat, where there are stores and hiking trails, as well as a museum that exhibits materials related to the forest resources and organisms of Lake Toya. The town is also famous as a resort town in Hokkaido, where canoeing and trekking can be enjoyed in summer and snowmobiling in winter. The town also offers hot springs, and is a popular destination for 2.5 million tourists a year. There are many hotels around the lake, and guests can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Toya.
