Selected as one of the top 100 rice terraces in Japan by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1999, the Higashi Ushirobata Tanada Rice Terraces located in the Yuya area of Nagato City in Yamaguchi prefecture offer a captivating scenery of the cobalt blue sea and green rice fields. From May to August, as the sun sets in the evening, squid fishing boats set sail, creating a dreamlike image of terraced rice fields, with the sunset’s golden pink glow and fishing lights in the background. While terraced rice paddies are usually located in mountainous areas, the Higashi Ushirobata Tanada is in a location overlooking the Sea of Japan. As the rice terraces change appearance with the change of seasons, visitors can enjoy different sceneries throughout the year.
