In 2023, Japan will host the G7 summit. The last time Japan hosted in 2016, the event held on Kashikojima Island in Shima City, Mie Prefecture. Shima is a city with active agriculture, fisheries, and tourism industries, a mild climate, and abundant nature. Shima City faces Ago Bay, one of Japan's representative "ria coastlines" which are formed by submerged river valleys. There are approximately 60 islands in the bay, and it is famous for its distinctive coastline and beautiful scenery. The sunsets and morning sunrises are especially spectacular and have been selected as one of the "100 Best Sunsets in Japan. It was also the first place in the world where pearl cultivation took place. The area around the bay is rich in plankton and the tides are calm, making it ideal for shellfish growth. The quality of pearls produced here is world-renowned and has many fans.
